History
St. Peter’s Church was originally built as a Chapel-of-Ease
for the parish of St. Andrew’s, Kirkella and was consecrated
in 1865. Unfortunately, it was not well designed and 18 years
later was pronounced unsafe. It had to be demolished and was
replaced with the current building which was opened in 1885.

Many of its fittings date
from the 1880’s, notably
the Choir stalls, the pulpit, the organ, the floor tiles.
The stained-glass windows are Victorian. In 1901, the parish
of Anlaby was formed principally from
parts
of Kirkella and Hessle parishes and St. Peter’s was
consecrated as a Parish Church in its own right by the then
Archbishop
of York. In the early 1900’s, a carved reredos was
given (since removed) and the Church clock installed.
A major renovation was carried out in the 1960’s
which mainly affected the Chancel and greatly improved
the lightness of the interior. More recent colour has been
provided
in the shape of beautifully decorated hassocks and the
splendid set of banners.

The churchyard, which was used for burials from 1873, has
long since been closed, with burials now at the Tranby Lane
Cemetery. A full list of inscriptions on the surviving gravestones
is available either from the Vicar or from the East Yorkshire
History Society (see ‘Links’).
Registers from St. Peter’s have been deposited at
the Archives Office which can be contacted at:
10, Lord Roberts Road, Beverley, HU17 9BA, tel. 392790 or
via the East Riding of Yorkshire Council website: www.eastriding.gov.uk
The parish War Memorial was constructed in 1921 in front
of the Church and a complete list of the Roll of Honour is
given below. It should be remembered that the parish of St.
Peter’s was much larger than at present and, therefore,
the Roll includes men from West Hull and Anlaby Common as
well as Anlaby village.
